Russia's oil tanker is being held up by a small group of Scottish islands.

They are trying all they can to prevent a Russian oil ship from landing in Orkney Islands, a tiny archipelago just off the Scottish mainland.

Arriving this week at the Flotta Terminal in Orkneys is Russia's Sovcomflot-owned NS Champion. Tanker monitoring data reveal that it has swerved toward the islands and then away from them during the previous several days. It's currently heading back in their direction.

It's unclear whether the vessel can be legally prevented, but the island's council claimed its anticipated arrival disturbed the local community in a statement. It added that it is in contact with the UK and Scottish governments. After Russia invaded Ukraine last week, this occurrence serves as a reminder of the unforeseen ways in which Russia's actions might affect oil trading.

We are doing everything legally possible to prevent this from happening — no stone is left unturned," the council added. For the sake of our neighborhood and our organization, we have worked relentlessly to find a solution to this problem involving a tanker's visit—and we hope that we have succeeded.

Grant Shapps, the UK's transport secretary, said on Monday afternoon that he has instructed all UK ports to deny entrance to Russian ships. He predicted that laws prohibiting the use of ships would follow.

Oil from the Flotta stream, a 40,000-barrel-per-day flow, is loaded on the Orkney Islands, which are home to around 22,000 people. Ship-to-ship transfers for the crude oil that helps determine the Dated Brent price, which serves as a benchmark for physical oil trading across the globe, are also carried out at the port of Rotterdam

Sovcomflot is one of the world's major owners of medium-sized oil tankers. The United States imposed sanctions on it last week, limiting its access to the debt markets. According to Interfax, the EU took similar moves.

The company's fleet also plays an important role in transporting North Sea oil to other ports in the United Kingdom and abroad.
